Abstract
This lecture is intended to review the pathology of the aortic valve, and to provide a basis for the understanding of and treatment of the important life-threatening diseases that affect the aortic valve. This understanding is important for the internist to question whether pharmacological vasodilator therapy could preserve left ventricular function and delay the need for aortic valve replacement.

Keywords: aortic valve; aortic regurgitation, aortic valve insuffience
