Abstract
Introduction: home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is currently widely used worldwide to guide treatment decisions for patients with arterial hypertension. The aim of this study was to obtain data on the extent to which patients adhere to home blood pressure measurement guidelines, whether they receive training, and how the quality of HBPM depends on the information obtained.
Materials and Methods: f study was conducted among 82 adult residents of Moscow, including a paper-based and online questionnaire. The paper-based survey was administered to participants in “HBPM schools” held at the Level 3 Medical Clinical Outpatient Clinic of the A.I. Burnazyan Federal Medical and Biological Center of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia immediately prior to the “schools.” The online survey was conducted independently among Moscow residents.
Results: none of the evidence-based HBPM recommendations were fully followed by all participants. Most respondents did not measure their blood pressure according to the predetermined schedule. Participants did not avoid measuring BP when under stress, discomfort, or pain, but rather were compelled to measure BP due to symptoms. When comparing subgroups of patients divided by whether they had responded affirmatively to the question about receiving training, no statistically significant differences were found in compliance with training, measurement conditions, or the measurement schedule.
Conclusion: long-term blood pressure monitoring requires standardized training in measurement protocols (such as the “722” protocol) to enable physicians to make appropriate and evidence-based clinical decisions based on these protocols.
