Abstract
Objective: to present information on the epidemiology of traumatic brain injury in the Russian Federation based on a summarization and analysis of published studies.
Materials and methods: a narrative review with elements of a systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus and eLIBRARY. The study materials include original studies, reviews, and meta-analyses containing data on the global and regional epidemiology of traumatic brain injury in the Russian Federation, clinical guidelines, WHO documents, national standards, and data from the Federal State Statistics Service.
Results: according to global studies, the age-standardized incidence of TBI is approximately 340 – 350 cases per 100,000 population per year; the leading causes of falls and road traffic accidents, with the primary risk groups being young and elderly men. In Russia, the incidence is estimated at 400 – 450 cases per 100,000 population (up to 600,000 cases per year), with regional rates ranging from approximately 115 to approximately 1817 cases per 100,000 population. The structure of causes is characterized by a high proportion of domestic and criminal injuries (up to 60-70%). The contribution of TBI to traumatic mortality and primary disability reaches 20 – 25% and 15 – 20%, respectively.
Conclusion: the Russian Federation is considered a country with a high burden of TBI, which justifies the need to strengthen injury prevention, improve epidemiological surveillance, and develop systems for early diagnosis of brain injury and patient referral.
Keywords: traumatic brain injury; epidemiology; mortality; disability; risk factors
